The Karate Kid Update..

Twenty - three years after Ralph Macchio gave hope to a generation of skinny male adolescents with his role in The Karate Kid, ” Tomorrow’s Entertainment ” has learnt from a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub.. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels..

We were also advised that Smith’s son Jaden, 9, is attached to star in the remake.. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith starred opposite his dad in last year’s The Pursuit of Happiness, which was also released by Sony.. We understand that this new Karate Kid is currently out to writers..

Bosses have ruled out bringing back Macchio to the role of Larusso because they deem him too old to play the teenage martial artist.. But that’s just it.. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was great in The Pursuit of Happyness but he’s 9! This is supposed to be The Karate Kid, a timeless franchise for teenagers, not The 3 Ninjas! It sounds to me like they’re going to kiddie up the flick and target the under ten - year olds.. If that’s the case, please let it be an in - name only remake; please don’t have Will Smith cameo as Mr Myagi.. Please, no Elle Fanning as Ali Mills..

Then again we should probably consider what happened to that other franchise Jerry Weintraub was going to relaunch.. Police Academy.. Remember, he was going to remake that a few years ago? I don’t see that playing anywhere, do you?

Pat Morita ( RIP ) will always be Mr Myagi..
