Warner Premiere - the Warner Bros.’s new direct to video sequel arm; the team prepping such sequels as Space Jam 2, Beetlejuice 2 and The Lost Boys 2 : The Tribe - have been toying with the idea of introducing 80’s adventure icons The Goonies to your local video stores, in the form of a direct - to - DVD sequel..

Rumors regarding a possible Goonies sequel began in 20 years ago, in 1987, with the release of Goonies 2, a NES video game.. For years, fans around the world speculated about, and believed, the existence of a film sequel.. Was it direct - to - video? Out of print? The cover art on the game’s box was pretty convincing..

The last script that surfaced had the original Goonies, now all - grown up, teaming up with their own children on an adventure.. I read the script and it wasn’t that bad..

Feldman recently revealed to ” Tomorrow’s Entertainment ” recently:

” Right now they are talking about the idea of doing it as an animated series!”

Feldman though isn’t holding his breath considering how many false starts that have already taken place on a sequel..

” I would like to say that there’s a great writer on it and it’s coming soon ( but ) I have nothing for you.. It’s a film Spielberg and Richard Donner want to definitely make sometime soon.. All of us ( the cast ) are eager to get back into character and starting working on the project together..

Again, Feldman touched on the script that I was referring to above (C the one with the Goonies teaming up with their kids.

” The one that I heard that worked the best was all of us were now grown up, and have our own kids.. And those kids get into some trouble and end up stumbling across some link to our past.. They discover who we really are and what we went through.. And, simultaneously, the Fratelli brothers find out that the kids have found out, so they’re out to get the kids and the kids are out to save their lives and their families..”

Donner had been trying to convince Warner Bros to make a sequel - a pricier sequel, one that would hit theaters - for several years.. In 2002, he said:

” We’re trying desperately.. We’re just trying to get Warner Bros., who owns it, to say yes..”

Donner’s sequel would’ve reunited the original cast, which included Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and others, with a new bunch of suburban kids, Donner said:

” The new group is called the Groonies, because they happen to live in a town where Data, the Chinese kid, lives.. He’s got an electronics repair shop and all the kids hang out at his shop.. He has this Chinese accent and he calls the Goonies the Groonies, and so the new kids call themselves the Groonies, until they get into a situation where the old Goonies have to save the new Groonies, or vice versa..”

Donner hasn’t said much more about the plot or the casting but said Astin’s character, Mikey, would be prominent, and Jeff Cohen’s Chunk would return..

” He is a lawyer now, you know,” Donner said of Cohen.. ” He graduated UC Berkeley Law School top of his class and he’s now a practicing lawyer here in Hollywood and phenomenal.. Damn right we’ll see him.. I’m very proud of every one of those kids.. They all turned out great..”

TE: Okay, what’s going on with The Goonies 2? Will you do it?

Sean Astin: You know I’ve been saying the same thing, of course I’d do it if it was right, if the character was good, if the story was right or whatever.. I’m totally up for it.. It’s more than a lock that it’ll get done.. Who knows when? There’s an animated thing that I’ve been hearing a lot about.. I would think that based on how much they’re promoting the DVD, not just promoting it but by how many DVD’s they’re selling, they’re kind of softening up the ground for their animated show that I’ve heard about.. Yeah, so stay tuned..

TE: Do you have any ideas with what you would like to see happen with that?

Sean Astin: Yeah, lots of ideas.. ( Laughs ) I do I have a whole version of the movie but nobody’s wanted to let me tell it to them.. Nobody in a position of authority has wanted me to tell it to them so it will probably die with me.. ( Laughs )..

The Goonies, which also starred Martha Plimpton ( Beautiful Girls ) and Joe Pantoliano ( The Sopranos ), centered on a group of teenagers who stumble upon a map of pirate ‘ One - Eyed ‘ Willy’s hidden fortune..
