The Flash Update..

Hollywood continues to make more and more comic book movies and the one in the headlines today is The Flash.. This project has gone through a number of other directors, including Shawn Levy ( Night at the Museum ) and David Goyer ( Blade Trinity, The Invisible ), but it seems to have finally officially landed in the hands of David Dobkin, who previously directed Shanghai Knights, Wedding Crashers, and this year’s Fred Claus.. Although the Justice League of America film still doesn’t have a firm cast, it looks like we have a director for the first official JLA spin - off..

David Dobkin ( Wedding Crashers ), has confirmed that he’s taken over directing the live - action feature film version of DC Comics’ The Flash for Warner Bros.. Not only that, but he also says his version of The Flash will exist in the JLA universe, the same as the upcoming live - action film.. Dobkin’s film will be a direct spin - off, likely the first of many solo spin - offs.. When asked which Flash character would be the one appearing in his movie, Dobkin responded with quickly with Wally West, who appeared in the comics from 1986 to 2006 and again in a recent series this year..

In the leaked script, the film opens with a funeral and then flashes ( * ahem * ) back a week, where Barry Allen is alive and well and having lunch with his wife Iris..  Now the big speculation is that it’s Barry’s funeral and that the Flash who shows up will be Wally..

The new movie is supposed to be light - hearted, whereas the JLA movie will likely be less so..  Wally’s recent appearances in pop media would lend his character to a more comedic role..

David Goyer, who wrote Batman Begins, was onboard there for a while - and he had Ryan Reynolds lined up to star - and I believe he’d found the perfect balance between silliness and seriousness.. Reynolds is a favourite actor of mine, so I am abit bias.. Not only would he suit the character, but he would also be perfect for the suit, being in the shape he is in..

I’ve always really liked The Flash and while I hold out little hope that they’ll ever get it done right, he’s just about the only superhero character left who really deserves his own movie.. I just hope Dobkin’s on the phone with Ryan Reynolds as we speak.. He’s the only perfect casting choice..

Originally created in 1940 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert for DC Comics, The Flash has the ability to run and move extremely fast, use superhuman reflexes and violate certain laws of physics, like time travel. He’s easily identified by his symbol of the lightning flash in a white circle and a red costume.
