The A - Team Update..

Ten years ago / In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit.. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground.. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune.. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire.. The A - Team..

After years of speculation, a plan to remake 80’s cult TV classic The A - Team as a big screen picture has finally come together.. It seems that the trend of films based on old television series isn’t over yet, though at least now things have moved from the 70’s to the 80’s.. This time, John Singleton, who might be best known for 1991’s Boyz N the Hood, will be bringing back the venerable show The A - Team..

For those who don’t recall the show, or perhaps weren’t alive during its run, The A - Team was about a team of Vietnam vets wanted by the military for some unclear ” crime they didn’t commit,” working as mercenaries on the side for an equally unclear reason.. Best of all, though, the show featured Mr. T, who pitied various fools throughout its five seasons..

However, don’t expect the new version to include ground shots of cars spinning in the air and the soldiers of fortune making tanks out of old beer cans..

According to the film’s producer ( And creator of the show ) Stephen J. Cannell, The A - Team will be updated from its Vietnam era to the Gulf War and will be less cartoony.. Cannell told Tomorrow’s Entertainment..

” Not to denigrate the TV show, but nobody ever died.. We drove cars off cliffs and people got out and walked away.. We’re not going to do that ( In the movie ).. In this the tone is more dangerous - you can really die.. It’s very tense and exciting..”

Producers now face the tough task of finding replacements for George Peppard, Dwight Schultz, Dirk Benedict and Mr T to play the leading roles..

Back in September word was that they were tossing everything out and starting all over again.. We theorized that the project might be on the verge of following in the footsteps of other long - rumored 80’s TV to movie translations like Knight Rider and The Bionic Woman and instead end up being remade back on TV.. But for The A - Team, it looks like a plan has finally come together..

It is understood an entirely new cast will be assembled for the film version, with members of the original cast having reportedly turned down the opportunity to make appearances.. Mr T, who played aerophobic tough guy BA Baracus, recently said..

” We don’t do cameos! You don’t disrespect us, or ‘Pow! Pow!’ It’s insulting me to ask me to be in it [ as someone else ].. It’s just like my ex - girlfriend saying ‘ Why don’t you come out to dinner with my new boyfriend?’ You see what I mean? I am not going to do that..”

Of the other members of the original cast, George Peppard ( Hannibal ) died in 1994, while Dirk Benedict ( Face ) was most recently seen in the reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother.. These days Dwight Shultz, who played the mentally unstable Murdock, appears to be making his living as a video game voice - over artist and presenter of a conservative talk radio podcast entitled Howling Mad Radio..

The rumor mill has kicked into overdrive with speculation about who might star in the Fox pic.. One name that’s popped up for the role of B.A. Baracus ( Immortalized on the small screen by Mr. T) is rapper - actor Ice Cube, who starred in Singleton’s debut, Boyz N the Hood..

Cube acknowledged that he has indeed been approached about the role, but doesn’t know if he’ll land it or not..

” They want me to do it if all the business works out right.. I was a fan as a kid and that would be, not a dream come true, but it’s definitely a good thing to do and I would put it on my resume for sure..”

Ice Cube said that he..

” Wouldn’t try to duplicate what Mr. T did..”

Cube wants to put his own spin on the character, but he did promise to wear the mohawk if he gets the role..

The latest incarnation, penned by Jayson Rothwell, revolves around a group of Iraq vets wanted by the U.S. military for a crime they didn’t commit.. Their adventures combine helping the innocent while running from the law.. Story has been given a modern twist by involving oil tycoons and laser technology..

The A - Team movie has been in production for years - at one point, it was said to be on target for a 2002 release, and the studio was rumored to be pursuing Ving Rhames, Jim Carrey, Christian Bale, and Mel Gibson to round out the cast.. ( Moral of the story: take The A - Team rumors with a big ol’ grain of salt..)

No shooting date is announced, but the certainty of Singleton as director means that the project is moving forward, probably pushed ahead now because its script is actually done ( Or at least has been rumored to be for years )..

With Singleton signing up onto the project, it could signal that Fox has decided to make the adaptation more of a straight - ahead action film, rather than an update on the series’ over - the - top action comedy.. Either way, you know what this report means - start naming your dream Team cast! Here is a few of our dream Team cast..
