The 2008 Oscars..
A lot of minor but welcome surprises were the only thing of note at this year’s 80th Annual Academy Awards.. Wins actually ended up going to efforts that many thought deserved to win but wouldn’t as they weren’t as ‘ Academy friendly ‘ as others in the category..
Marion Cotillard deservingly beat out veteran actress Julie Christie for the Best Actress award, Taxi to the Dark Side beat out No End in Sight and Sicko for Best Documentary, There Will Be Blood took home Best Cinematography over Roger Deakins work in both Jesse James and No Country, even New Line’s fantasy bomb The Golden Compass landed a visual effects Oscar over the splashier Transformers..
Perhaps the only real even vaguely minor upset was Tilda Swinton’s superb ” Michael Clayton ” performance taking out supporting actress over Cate Blanchett’s more showy and interesting Bob Dylan turn in I’m Not There.. One welcome surprise was The Bourne Ultimatum scooping up three awards in the tech categories, the most awards of the night short of the four nods to Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men..
Other wins were more along expected and very much deserving lines, notably No Country scoring Best Picture ( yay!), Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor & Direction nods.. Daniel Day - Lewis taking Best Actor, Diablo Cody’s Juno winning Best Screenplay ( Original ), Sweeney Todd for Art Direction, Atonement for Score, La Vie En Rose for Make - Up, Elizabeth: The Golden Age for Costumes, and Falling Slowly from Once winning Best Song..
The Counterfeiters won in the absolute joke that was the Foreign Film category this year ( Academy rules blocked out at least half a dozen major films more deserving ), whilst Ratatouille not unexpectedly won Best Animated Feature..
On the red carpet the likes of Katherine Heigl, Amy Ryan, Cate Blanchett and Laura Linney ruled the fashion stakes whilst Diablo Cody, Julie Christie, Wesley Snipes and Nicole Kidman all ended up in rather questionable attire..
