Review: Superbad..
From producers Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson ( The 40 - Year - Old Virgin ), screenwriters Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen ( Da Ali G Show ), and director Greg Mottola comes Superbad, an hilarious coming - of - age cautionary tale about two socially inept teenage boys about to graduate high school..
Rated: [ MA ] Strong Sexual References and Crude Humour, Coarse Language
Cinema release: 20th September 2007
Running time: 113 minutes
Stars: Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader
Following in the footsteps of the massive commercial successes of The 40 - Year - Old Virgin and Knocked Up, producer Judd Apatow again brings uproarious laughs with the raunchy teen comedy Superbad.. Lacking the mainstream appeal and warmth of the aforementioned films, Superbad nevertheless will leave you rolling in the aisles with its jaunty comic pacing and incredibly funny - and crude - script..
Best friends and social misfits Evan ( Michael Cera ) and Seth ( Jonah Hill ) are heading to a high - school party with the ultimate goal of winning the respective girls of their dreams - but first must provide the party with much - needed booze.. With the help of their friend Fogell ( Christopher Mintz - Plasse ) and his newly acquired fake ID ( Sporting the moniker ‘ McLovin ‘ ) their journeys take crossroads as not all goes to plan..
There is an infectious likeability about the three leads.. Cera ( Almost reprising his Arrested Development role) as the nice but awkward Evan and Hill as the Cartman - esque wildcard bounce off each other and possess incredible chemistry, while Mintz - Plasse as the ultra - dorky Fogell is also a find..
Recalling American Pie and a little Dazed and Confused ( Throw in some Revenge of the Nerds for good measure ), Superbad is ultimately good, unclean fun.. The comedy here is in the dialogue, which presents some classic one - liners as the boys muse about all things sexual.. It is hard not be caught up by the infantile glee in discussions about anatomy and awkward teenage situations..
A caveat must be forwarded here though, for Superbad is super - dirty, often resorting to what could be described as ‘ low denominators ‘ in terms of comedy - vomit, oral sex, genitalia and even menstrual blood.. This crudeness may leave some repulsed, especially those outside the targeted younger demographic..
There are one or two slight lulls, namely when the focus shifts from our two heroes to Fogell’s run - in with two inept cops.. Superbad could have been an incredibly slick 90 - minute romp but instead runs for 110 minutes, but the fact that these overextended subplots are still funny is a credit to the film..
For those who choose to see Superbad knowing full well what kind of humour they are about to witness, it is consistently laugh - out - loud funny and certainly one of the funniest films of the year..
I give Superbad 4 out of 5..
