Ooh Betty! Frank Spencer Gets Remade for US..

One of British TV’s best loved comedy characters is to return to the small screen.. The Fox TV network has asked the BBC to make a pilot episode of the comedy, which saw well - meaning disaster zone Frank Spencer try and fail to provide a better life for his long - suffering wife Betty..

Frank Spencer, star of the 1970’s sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, will return in a pilot for Fox TV, the network owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp..

The original ran for three seasons from 1973 and launched the career of Michael Crawford who most famously went on to play the title character in the stage version of The Phantom of the Opera..

Its most memorable trait however, aside from Crawford’s brilliant portrayal, was the fact that he did all his own physical stunts throughout - many of which were elaborate and sometimes dangerous, all while clad in his familiar beret and trench - coat.. These included a day trip that culminated in Frank hanging from his Morris Minor as it teetered on a cliff edge and a roller - skate ride that saw Spencer crash through doors, shops and even skate under a passing lorry..

Fox has asked BBC Worldwide Production to partner Sony Pictures for the remake, with That 70’s Show writer Phil Stark set to script and executive produce the show..

Raymond Allen, creator of the original series, said he was thrilled that effeminate disaster zone Spencer would be returning to TV..

” I never would have dreamt 35 years ago when I originally wrote the series that dearly loved but disastrous Frank would be creating havoc on American soil..” he exclaimed..

” It’s a very exciting time.. and a treasured moment of glory for Frank!”

Paul Telgedy, executive producer of BBC Worldwide, added..

” We have felt for a while now that Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em would translate brilliantly across the pond.. With Philip’s exceptional skills on board we’re confident we’ll produce a winning pilot with the ultimate aim of bringing Ray’s fantastic show to millions of US viewers..”

The series will reunited the My Wife and Kids team of Damon Wayans and producer Don Reo ( Everybody Hates Chris ).. That’s right folks.. Damon Wayans has been attached to this project..

The half - hour comedy will star Wayans as a man who discovers his late wife had a 19 - year - old son.. The young man moves in with his stepfather, and a generational clash ensues..

Will it translate? UK sitcoms more often than not have great difficulty making the switch.. For every scant success ( The Office, Steptoe and Son ) there’s usually several failures ( Absolutely Fabulous, Men Behaving Badly, Coupling, Red Dwarf )..

Indeed many thought Mothers was up there with the likes of other great British 70’s & 80’s sitcoms like Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister that are generally considered such perfect examples of comedy as to be untouchable.. But as we have seen of late, nothing is untouchable when it comes to Hollywood doing remakes..

The title of the Americanized series will probably change..
